Houston installs countdown signals to aid pedestrians

Houston is installing signals that tell pedestrians how long they have to safely cross the street. In addition to promoting safety, it will save the city money according to a Chron Wrap Up story, but here's another way to expand on the idea of traffic signals that count down -- use them as a way to curb red light running (via Scott Henson):

...installing lights that visibly countdown with a digital counter on greens and yellows...gives drivers literally split-second information about when the yellow turns to red.

You know, if it's about safety and not revenue.
