Galveston County Daily News reports on Chron changes

Laura Elder of the Galveston County Daily News reports on some changes at the Chronicle:

Houston Chronicle reporter Kevin Moran has covered the island for a quarter of a century.

In media circles and among news consumers, Moran, 57, is a Galveston institution, covering through the years everything from hurricanes to murder trials of cross-dressing real-estate heirs. But last week, Moran was officially reassigned to the Chronicle’s online edition, causing him to be the subject of news.

Houston Chronicle reporter Harvey Rice will replace Moran on the island beat. Rice is married to Jackie Cole, who announced she would resign from the city council when his appointment became effective. Cole said she wanted to avoid a conflict of interest that her husband’s new job could pose.

Moran said he intends to continue living in Galveston with his wife, Marie Westmoreland, and their 16-year-old son, Sean.

After working from his home all these years, Moran said he’d make the commute from Galveston to Houston each morning.

George Haj, deputy managing editor of the Chronicle, said Moran’s reassignment was not part of a major shift in strategy for covering south Galveston County.

“It’s more about expanding what we do online. We wanted a veteran reporter to anchor our early morning online shift,” Haj said. “Galveston is an incredibly important beat for us, and it’s an exciting community going through a lot of changes.”

It would be nice to know the internal politics behind such moves, but such things are rarely mentioned publicly.
