The DA runoff race nastiness ends tomorrow

Tomorrow is the big runoff election for Harris County District Attorney.

In the last week or so, the race has gotten particularly nasty. Pat Lykos, perhaps realizing that her temperament and lack of trial-lawyer experience (not to mention the endorsement of the Chronicle Editorial LiveJournalists) probably aren't going to sell her to Republican voters, has gone on the attack against her better qualified opponent, Kelly Siegler. Several local bloggers blasted one of the nastier pieces of attack literature against Siegler, put out by Terry Lowry (who seemingly runs an endorsement-for-hire shop).

Later, the Chronicle's Alan Bernstein did some digging into campaign financing, and reported (here and here) that the financial backing for the deceptively-named PAC behind another nasty anti-Siegler attack piece came from none other than.... Robert Eckels, who has also thrown tons of his leftover campaign cash to the general Lykos campaign.

That would be the same Robert Eckels who broke a commitment to people who elected him, so that he could leave politics.

Then, he effectively breaks the commitment to leave politics in order to finance vicious Lykos attacks on a fellow Republican.

As County Judge, Robert Eckels always seemed like a fairly decent sort. More recently? Not so much.
