Callie nails it

After David Carr got sacked (to knock the Texans out of field goal range) and the punter took a perfect snap, managing to drop the ball not on his foot but on the ground (thereby giving the Jets great field position), my significant other had the following observation:

It's like watching the Three Stooges play football.

Except there are more than three with this crew.

The best thing about Lee's signing today...

Here he is...

Hey, 45 was Gas Can Gallo's number.

I don't think the Lefty That Launched A Thousand Rallies is coming back anytime soon.

Or, as my pal Sid said, you know you're not ready for the bigs when you only have to be better than the walking corpse of John Franco.

Both assertions cannot be true

Earlier this week, Chronicle columnist John Lopez wrote the following:

When the offseason began and the Astros' front office held meetings trying to determine which players would be worth the expense, the list was narrowed to four. Soriano was at the top, a clear No. 1 target. Next came Jermaine Dye, a restricted free agent, then Aramis Ramirez and [Carlos] Lee.

Today, Drayton McClane cheerleader Jesus Ortiz posted the following to his blog:

Tim Purpura has worked his butt off negotiating to land Carlos Lee, who actually was the Astros' top target this winter even though some teams considered Alfonso Soriano better.

Both of these assertions cannot be true.

I wonder whose version is right?

Good news, dumb lede

Drayton McLane's cheerleader Jesus Ortiz reports good news for Astros fans:

The Astros have called a press conference for 4 p.m. today to announce the signing of slugging outfielder Carlos Lee, bringing optimism to Lee's new teammates.

It continues to amaze that professional reporters and editors produce such work for a major newspaper.

The big story is the signing of Lee, and THAT should have been the lede -- not the mental state of Lee's new teammates, as determined by one Jesus Ortiz.

UPDATE: The Astros also reached a deal with pitcher Woody Williams.

Why Fluff?

The Chronicle's Michael Murphy has a nice story today on UH basketball newcomer Robert McKiver, with the lowdown on McKiver's nickname (Fluff).

McKiver has stepped in and is averaging close to 30 points per game. He's got a sweet shot, and seemed fearless in the only game I've been able to watch live (Monmouth) so far.

This looks to be a fun season at Hofheinz.

Way to go, Texans!

The Texans had a nice opportunity to get some momentum going today and maybe even start rebuilding a fan base that has dwindled.

They were facing a team they should beat.

The weather was beautiful.

There was every reason to believe the Texans might win two games in a row.

Well, every reason to believe it unless you've watched this team perform at all since its inception.

You have to give them credit with being able to snatch defeat from victory in the closing seconds of games. They are creative losers, at least.

Today's game was DEFINITELY some Bad Sports.

Coogs win home opener; AP covers story for Chron

UH opened its home basketball season this afternoon:

Lafayette, UH top Monmouth

Associated Press

Oliver Lafayette scored a team-high 29 points to lead the Houston Cougars to an 89-80 win over the visiting Monmouth Hawks on Saturday.

It's nice that Chron.com has the story covered via the Associated Press.

That is world class.

UPDATE (11-20-2006): Michael Murphy emails that Dale Robertson covered the game for the Chronicle. The AP coverage was simply a placeholder on Chron.com until the Robertson story was ready to go. That's very good to hear, actually, and an update I'm pleased to make!

15 November 2006

Why?

Prose like this is painful:

The Texans are confident the franchise is changing. It's not like in the offseason when you could look at the new coaching staff, point out the roster moves and see the impact of a new general manager.

This time, it's not as simple. The changes aren't so much on the outside. At least, not the ones the players are talking about.

Why is Megan Manfull covering such an important beat for a relatively large newspaper?

Nice sports weekend

Have Houston sports franchises ever had a more successful weekend?

The Dynamo won the MLS title.

The Rockets beat the defending NBA champs on their court.

The Texans won on the road.

UH won on the road.

Rice won on the road.

Sweet.

KBME to offer local sports talk midday

The Chronicle's David Barron reports that KBME's local midday sports talk show starts today:

KBME (790 AM) will continue weaning itself from ESPN Radio today, replacing the Dan Patrick Show with a noon to 3 p.m. weekday show featuring Ted DeLuca and Chronicle columnist John P. Lopez.

Lopez said the TD and J-Lo Show will provide a local alternative to the national slant of Patrick, which moves to KFNC (97.5 FM) in January, and the Jim Rome Show on KILT (610 AM).

" Jim Rome has what I would call a cult following, and I don't mean that in a disparaging way," Lopez said. " Dan Patrick does what he does well, but it's a sweeping look at the nation and an infomercial for ESPN, which is fine.

"But that leaves a void. There's been no local talk at that hour. But now, if something happens at 10 a.m., you won't have to wait anymore to get analysis and opinion from local guys."

I've never listened to Lopez, so I'll be curious how it goes. If the local show is good, then I would imagine it could have some ratings success (although competing against Rome is tough). If the local show resembles that terrible KBME morning effort, though....

Dynamo!

The Dynamo won the MLS championship earlier!

They're really going to want that new stadium now.

And who can really blame them, after a year in the Robertson dump.

10 November 2006

That's more like it

I posted after that first Rockets game, which was just awful.

I watched the last two games -- both on the road -- and the Rockets looked MUCH better. And they got two wins, to go 2-2 on the road and 3-2 overall.

Now that Tracy McGrady is shooting and Yao Ming is playing well, they look pretty good. But it really does come down to those two being healthy and productive, doesn't it?

The CoogFans crew will not be happy with Hoffy!

The Chronicle's Ken Hoffman attended a Dynamo playoff game, and was not impressed with the dump known as Robertson Stadium:

With the success of the Houston Dynamo, who are playing for the MLS championship Sunday against the New England Revolution (hate them), how about a new stadium for our soccer guys?
For our loser teams, we build palaces that would make Saddam Hussein proud, but we force the Dynamo to play in ratty Robertson Stadium with lame food stands and bathrooms that look like the ancient Romans built them.

Last Sunday, I was walking to my seat and noticed a small box sitting in the open next to a concession stand. I asked a guard, what's that? He said, "It's a rat trap." Lovely.

Later I was told that when Dynamo officials toured Robertson Stadium before the start of the season, they found a huge dead rat in the press box.

Let's find the Dynamo a new home near downtown.

Robertson is a dump. There is no doubt about that. I just don't know that it logically follows that because Robertson is a dump, the Dynamo now deserve a multimillion dollar playpen courtesy of the local sports taxing authority.

Still, there's not much doubt in my mind that Oliver Luck is going to get a nice new playpen from the local sports taxing authority (which should have been disbanded some time ago). And UH will still be playing in a dump.

If you want people to stop using the word crap, quit writing like it.

Richard Justice fires a shot across my bow:

Let's update our list of banned words: crap, suck, freaking. For those of you who went to lesser instituions of higher learning, try to emulate the Rice posters who use good grammar and punctuation, and never ever use dirty words.

Maybe if you stopped writing sucky crap, like suggesting that Brad Lidge ought to stay because he's such a nice guy, people would stop freaking saying it.

There's nothing freaking wrong with the word crap, suckboy.

New Rockets fail to impress in opener

I had this stinker of a basketball game on in the background as I was catching up on some news last night.

It reminded me why I rarely watch the Rockets or NBA basketball in general until the playoffs roll around.

Defense is not emphasized, too many players take too many plays off, and the product just isn't very interesting (unless the Phoenix Suns and their frenetic offense are involved).

Thankfully, the UH Cougar basketball season is just around the corner.
